Frequently Asked Questions:

  • TRAIN (TSC Remote Assessment & Intervention) is a remote intervention study for children with TSC, using the JASPER treatment approach.

  • JASPER (Joint Attention, Symbolic Play, Engagement, and Regulation) is a treatment approach based on a combination of developmental and behavioral principles developed by Dr. Connie Kasari at UCLA. It targets the foundations of social communication (joint attention, imitation, play) and uses naturalistic strategies to increase the rate and complexity of social communication. For more information, click here.

  • The study is completely virtual. All meetings and interventions will take place online via Zoom.

  • JASPER intervention is a parent-mediated therapy. For the coached group, weekly intervention sessions will include hands-on training to teach caregivers how to implement the social communication strategies at home. Caregivers will also have weekly phone calls with interventionists to discuss successes and challenges of at-home intervention. For the self-guided group, caregivers will be supplied with narrated powerpoints, instructing how to implement the communication strategies.

  • Yes! Enrollment for our study is ongoing, which means if your child falls between 12 and 36 months at the time of enrollment, your family may be eligible to begin the study. If your child is not yet 12 months, we encourage you to contact our research team to begin the study when they age in. For more information, please contact JASPERforTSC@gmail.com.

  • Once you decide to enroll in the study, you'll conduct your first remote visit for your child's entry assessment, which includes online questionnaires and a video assessment. At your first assessment, you will be randomized to either a coached or self-guided treatment group. Both groups will receive 12 weeks of remote intervention.
